Overview:
The ADuM31601 is a USB port isolator based on Analog Devices, Inc., iCoupler® technology. Combining high speed CMOS process with monolithic air core transformer technology, this device provides outstanding performance and is easily integrated with low and full speed USB-compatible peripherals. Many microcontroller implementations of USB only bring out the D+ and D− lines to external pins. This is adequate for many applications because it requires very few external components and simplifies design; however, it presents a challenge when isolation is required. Because the USB lines must switch between actively driving D+/D− and allowing external resistors to set the bus state, the ADuM3160 architecture can both detect the direction of data flow and control the state of the output buffers. Data flow direction is determined on a packet-by-packet basis. The ADuM3160 combines edge detection-based iCoupler technology with internal logic to create a transparent, easy-to-configure, upstream-facing port isolator. Isolating the upstream port offers several advantages including simpler circuitry, power management, and robust operation. Propagation delay for this isolator is comparable to that of standard hubs and cables. It can be powered from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V bus voltage on either side and can internally regulate that voltage to signal levels, allowing direct connection to VBUSx. The ADuM3160 provides isolated control of the pull-up resistor so that the peripheral can control connection timing. The device consumes very little current in the idle state, thus requiring no suspend state. A 5 kV reinforced isolation version is also available as the ADuM4160.
